Saburo Hamanaka
Chairman
Mr. Hamanaka joined Sepracor as a Member of the Board in October 2009 following the acquisition of the company by Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. (DSP). In February 2010, Mr. Hamanaka was appointed Chairman of Sepracor. Mr. Hamanaka has been a part of the DSP organization since July 2006 and also serves as Executive Officer of DSP.
Prior to joining DSP, Mr. Hamanaka was Corporate Officer and General Manager of U.S. Operations for Takeda Pharmaceuticals. From 1998 to 2002, Mr. Hamanaka was President of Takeda Pharmaceutical North America based in Chicago and served in various roles at TAP Pharmaceuticals from 1983 to 1990. Mr. Hamanaka began his career in the pharmaceutical industry in 1967 when he joined Takeda’s pharmaceutical operations in Japan.
Mark Iwicki
President and Chief Operating Officer
Mark Iwicki joined Sepracor in October 2007 as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, and in February 2010, was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer and became a member of Sepracor's Board of Directors. Mr. Iwicki is responsible for leading Sepracor's Commercial Group, Supply Chain Operations, Human Resources & Administration, Information Technology and Corporate Development & Licensing.
Prior to joining Sepracor, Mr. Iwicki held senior positions at Novartis Pharmaceuticals from 1998 through 2007, most recently as Vice President and Cardiovascular Business Franchise Head. Prior to that, Mr. Iwicki was head of the Arthritis, Bone, Gastrointestinal, HRT, Infectious Disease and Urology Business Franchise Head. Before joining Novartis, Mr. Iwicki held various sales and marketing positions at Merck and Astra Merck. Mr. Iwicki earned his B.S. from Ball State University and an MBA from Loyola College.
Andrew I. Koven
Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
Prior to joining Sepracor in March 2007, Mr. Koven was Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
at Kos Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which was acquired by Abbott Laboratories in December 2006. At Kos, he oversaw the legal,
compliance and quality assurance functions.
From 2000 until 2003, Mr. Koven served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Lavipharm Laboratories Inc., a drug delivery and specialty pharmaceutical company. Mr. Koven served in increasingly responsible roles at Warner-Lambert Company between 1993 and 2000, most recently in the position of Assistant General Counsel, Pharmaceuticals, North America.
Prior to joining Warner-Lambert, Mr. Koven was a corporate/securities associate at Cahill Gordon & Reindel in New York City. Mr. Koven earned his B.A. in 1978 from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his LL.B. in 1981 from Dalhousie Law School and his LL.M. in 1986 from Columbia University School of Law.
Thomas H. Large, Ph.D.
Executive Vice President, Discovery and Early Clinical Research
Tom Large joined Sepracor in early 2007 as Vice President of Drug Discovery and was promoted to Senior Vice President of Drug Discovery in 2009. In February 2010, Dr. Large was appointed Executive Vice President of Discovery and Early Clinical Research (DECR).
Prior to joining Sepracor, Dr. Large was a scientific leader and manager for eight years at Eli Lilly in neuroscience research, where he led several projects that resulted in clinical candidates for anxiety, psychosis and pain. During his tenure with Eli Lilly, Dr. Large also managed a group developing innovative approaches for drug targets in the central nervous system (CNS), endocrine and oncology therapeutic areas.
Dr. Large's academic training was at Northwestern University where he received his Ph.D. in Neurobiology/Physiology followed by a Howard Hughes postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Large became a faculty member of the Department of Neurosciences at Case Western Reserve University Medical School, a position he held until 1997.
Richard Ranieri
Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Administration
Mr. Ranieri joined Sepracor from Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. where he was Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. Mr. Ranieri managed and directed Neurocrine Biosciences' human resources, corporate communications, operations and purchasing functions. He also served as a corporate officer and was a member of the senior management team, as well as Secretary to the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors. Prior to his tenure with Neurocrine Biosciences, Mr. Ranieri served as Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Genencor International Inc. for 12 years, contributing to its growth from a start-up to a publicly traded company with over 2,000 employees worldwide. Prior to joining Genencor, Mr. Ranieri spent over 13 years with GlaxoSmithKline where he held a variety of human resources and sales management positions.
Mr. Ranieri earned his bachelor's degree from Villanova University and received his Master's degree in Organizational Development from Rider University.
Robert F. Scumaci
Executive Vice President and Special Advisor to the Chairman
As of January 2010, Mr. Scumaci was appointed Executive Vice President and Special Advisor to the Chairman. Prior to this, Mr. Scumaci served as Sepracor's Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Scumaci served as Executive Vice President, Corporate Finance, Administration and Technical Operations since May 2007 and as Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration at Sepracor since February 2001. Mr. Scumaci served as Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration at Sepracor from March 1996 to February 2001 and as Vice President and Controller from March 1995 until March 1996.
Prior to joining Sepracor, Mr. Scumaci was Vice President of Finance and Administration, North American Operations with Ares-Serono Group, a multinational pharmaceutical company from 1987 to 1994. Previously, he was associated with Revlon and Coopers & Lybrand in various finance and accounting capacities.
Nobuhiko Tamura
Executive Vice President, Clinical Research and Medical Affairs
Mr. Nobuhiko Tamura is currently the President of Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma America (DSPA), which is a position he has held since 2007, and Executive Officer of Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. (DSP). In February 2010, Mr. Tamura took on the additional responsibilities of Executive Vice President of Clinical Research and Medical Affairs at Sepracor.
Mr. Tamura began his career at Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. as a researcher in the Pharmaceutical Division engaged in new drug discoveries. In 1984, he was transferred to Sumitomo Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (SP) upon its establishment as a subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical. After six years in the discovery laboratory of SP, he broadened his experience working in a business development group in New York and served as a U.S. representative of SP America for five years. From 1994 to 2007, Mr. Tamura transitioned to the R&D Division of SP and DSP, leading several biological projects and new chemical entities for the treatment of central nervous system and other diseases. During this time, he also cultivated alliances with universities.
